Where Have I been?

I consider myself a very patient, steady as she goes, level headed person with an optimistic outlook on life. For the last month I have exhibited the patience and all the rest, but my cool as slowly turned to heat. What phenomena managed to fluster me? My computer. I want to get my latest book "A Promise Is A Promise" published and it should have been the first of May. I sent my text to the publisher. That went through fine. After that everything went down hill. My adobe reader stopped working properly. I can't get the text on the cover to show up. I have tinkered and investigated and flooded www.ask.com with questions to the point I am afraid I will do damage to my computer. The thing is I have at least fifty books spoke for and they aren't ready. Now don't that frost your cake! Oh, I did sneak outside once in a while to work on a flower bed or in the garden, but I lost most of May at the computer with no results. Do I want to pay several hundred dollars for a program just like the one I have? No. So I have to remind myself I am the patient type and keep trying. Gotta go. Haven't been tried out ask a question yet today. Maybe there's hope yet that I will find an answer that fits my problem.

Happy Mother's Day

Tomorrow is a day to miss my mother. I think of her often but Mother's Day makes me remember her special motherly talents. She had a way about her like a mother hen gathering all her chicks for a feast she cook in the same way she gathered us together when we needed her to understand, listen and take care of us. Holidays were special to her. She would decorate and cook, preparing for all of us to come home. The table would be full of food for lunch and we'd have enough left overs for supper. Mom had a talent for baking dinner rolls that we called buns. She made the best angel food cakes for our birthdays and candies for Christmas. Always there was extra cake or candy for all of us to take home. Not only was she a good cook but she was kind hearted when she saw someone in need. There was always room for one more at her table. Her garden always produced enough to send home fresh vegetables with people who didn't have a garden. Though it wasn't something she said often, we all felt her love and miss her being with us. Happy Mother's Day Mom.

where have I been?

Where have I been? I see it has been ten days since my last post. Besides not being home at times, a few days ago I knew it was going to start raining and continue for days. I tackled my large flower beds with a passion, digging out grass and weeds, fertilizing and planting flower seeds. Sometimes I find a volunteer that I can save. Hours in a row at hard labor for two days and I was looking for my bottle of pain killers once I got out of my recliner. Now I am fully recovered and still have two beds to do but the rain beat me to it. Oh well, someday!

I have no rhyme or rhythm to my flowers. I like a variety and happily accept any and all that appear on their own plus the many that come up every year. I had company Tuesday. I took my friend for a tour of my flower beds and garden. It's like giving the history of my family tree. The fern peony was a piece of my mother's. She always called it Mother's Day peony because that's when it blooms. The vigorous dark pink peony, already three feet tall, is my Grandfather's. He died in 1924 when my father was 12. When we moved to Iowa from Missouri in 1961, Mom asked Dad what he would like to bring with him. He said he wanted to go home and get one of his dad's peony. Just before he died, Grandpa planted a row in the front yard. I brought some of the tubers to my house. In a pot in my rose bed is a portion of a Christmas cactus that Mom held on her lap coming to Iowa. A neighbor gave a start to her in the fifties. It was fifty years old or more and belonged to the neighbor's mother. I have some wild geraniums I picked up while mushroom hunting. My mother in law has given me tulips, roses and other flowers. With all of that and more, I still can't resist picking up a few packages of flower seeds or some bedding plants to go with what I have. It's in the genes. That I'm sure of.

Kalona Iowa trip

Yesterday was a beautiful summer day in early spring. Just a fluke it seems since today is thirty degrees cooler and rainy. Not that I'm complaining. We need the rain because optimists that we are, we already have quite a bit of veggies planted in our garden and five tomatoes set out. The ground is cold but dry and needed the moisture. Today the apricot tree is a mass of pink, tulips and hyacinths are in bloom and the bush cherries are snow white. Now that makes me an optimist because I know warm weather is not far behind.
We had our pick of Friday or Saturday to go to Kalona to see the quilt show and tour the Amish grocery stores, antique shops and countryside. Hoping that the weather man was right about Friday, we went yesterday and were real pleased with the day. There is something surreal about parking next to a horse and rockaway or eating in a booth with an Amish man waiting for his food in the next booth and an Amish woman serving us. Though Amish driven horses with rockaways and springboards were out and about, the fields were being prepared by tractor (with steel wheels) driven equipment. I've read the Amish are fifty years behind the modern times. To them, their tractors must be quite an improvement over horses.

It's a good day in the neighborhood

It's a good day when I've done something that helps other people. I just came from doing two presentations at the local high school Alzheimer's. The short time those health classes spend doing clinicals at the nursing home is so short they can't really get a sense of how hard it is for the residents who are suffering with Alzheimer's. I spent fifteen and a half years taking care of those residents and my father before that. I told those teenagers I made lemonade out of the lemons life handed me. First taking care of my father for ten years then my mother after that and working at the nursing home taught me so much. I wrote two books and joined the Alzheimer's Association as a volunteer, had a Alzheimer's support group for eight years. The experiences have been great, but nothing is better than talking to those young people that are just starting out and need to learn about this dreadful disease that is going to take the life away from so many elderly Americans in the next few decades if we don't find a cure.
Anyone need to learn more about this disease my books "Open A Window" a training education for all caregivers and my experiences with my father "Hello Alzheimer's Good Bye Dad" can be purchased through me at booksbyfay@yahoo or through the Lemstone Christian Bookstore in Cedar Rapids, Iowa or Amazon

Website for promotion of book

I've got a list of websites. Author Den www.authorden is one that I like. I put the first chapters of my books on the site and get comments from readers about how they liked the stories. It's good to get feed back especially if the review is a good one.
Have company coming.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter. Yesterday was cool and cloudy, but not bad as far as Easters go. Today is much colder and rainy. Two days ago I set out a tomato plant with a milk jug over it. Tonight is going to get down to freezing. That might put an end to my experiment. We'll see.
Today has been a day to stay on the computer doing research. So many websites to look through, I get bleary eyed just trying to digest all that I find. I printed some of the information off and put in a folder. Some day I might be able to use it.
